Many people believe that shaving hair or body hair causes it to grow back thicker and faster. But is this really true? Let’s find out.
Does Shaving Make Hair Grow Thicker and Faster? Myth or Fact?
Research has shown that shaving hair on any part of the body does not make it grow back thicker or faster. Shaved hair may appear thicker and coarser because it has a blunt tip, making it feel rougher to the touch. Additionally, newly grown hair may look darker because it has not yet been exposed to sunlight, soap, and other environmental factors.
The Normal Hair Growth Cycle
Hair growth and shedding occur in four distinct phases:
1. Anagen Phase (Growth Phase)
The anagen phase, or growth phase, is the longest stage of the hair cycle. It lasts approximately 3 to 5 years for scalp hair, while hair on other parts of the body has a much shorter anagen phase. During this stage, hair follicles actively produce new hair, which continues to grow until it eventually sheds.
2. Catagen Phase (Transition Phase)
The catagen phase is a brief transitional period marking the end of the anagen phase. This phase lasts about 10 days or more, during which hair follicles shrink, and hair growth slows down.
3. Telogen Phase (Resting Phase)
The telogen phase lasts about three months, during which 10-15% of hair follicles remain inactive. Hair does not grow during this phase, but it also does not shed.
4. Exogen Phase (Shedding Phase)
The exogen phase, or shedding phase, is an extension of the telogen phase. During this period, hair naturally falls out due to friction, washing, or combing.
On average, 50-100 hairs are shed daily. This phase can last between two to five months.
How to Care for Your Skin After Shaving
After shaving any part of your body—whether your head, legs, arms, armpits, or genital area—it’s important to keep the skin moisturized to prevent irritation and folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles). Applying an aftershave cream or moisturizer helps soothe the skin and reduce irritation.
Many natural ingredients can be used after shaving to moisturize the skin, such as vitamin E oil, shea butter, and aloe vera gel. Avoid aftershave creams that contain alcohol, as they tend to dry out the skin and cause irritation.
Steps for Using Aftershave Cream or a Natural Moisturizer:
- Do shaving on your face, head, feet, armpits or body parts anywhere
- Rinse with cold water before applying cream aftersave, gel or lotion moisturizer
- Use a soft towel to dry the skin by tapping. rubbed the skin will only cause irritation and can damage the skin
- Apply cream aftersave, gel or lotion moisturizer and gently rub to spread evenly on the skin
If you experience excessive itching, redness, painful bumps, or signs of infection after shaving, you may have folliculitis, which can be caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. If symptoms persist, consult a doctor for appropriate treatment.
